K&A Website Development Rates.
Introduction:
When I explain to a curious acquaintance
or potential customer that part of what K&A
does for it's clients is to develop their
websites, I often get questions about exactly
what we do and how much it costs. Well, it's a complicated question because
websites are all different. In an effort to put together a starting point,
the following are some rough numbers. Before taking on a website project for a
customer, K&A develops a Website plan,
similar to a marketing plan but within the
specific medium of a website.
Website Development Plan - Before taking on a website project for
a customer, K&A develops a website marketing
plan, similar to a business marketing plan
but within the specific medium of a website. This plan will detail the tasks to be completed
by K&A in the development
of the website.
It will also detail the information
and tasks
that must be completed for the
customer in
order for the site to be successful.
Developing this plan runs between $100 and
$200, depending on the complexity of the
site being developed. (A sample proposal can be seen by clicking here - it will open up in a separate window). This fee is paid at the time of the plan
development, but if the site decides to go
forward, we will credit it toward the site
development costs.
Initial Setup - Registration of domain names, server set
up costs and the like typically run about
$50 to $100, depending on the server hosts
and a few other factors. The domain name registration is a fee paid
for the name you wish to us in
the web (for
example, we are kamena-associates.com). A search will be made to see if the name
you select is available, so it
might not
be a bad idea to have a back-up
or two if
you think that your first choice
might be
in use by somebody else. You can always try to look up a name you
like and see if you get somebody else's site. If you get a "can't find or resolve
address" error message, there is a good
chance the name is available.
Website Development:
This is the area where the most variation
of costs occurs. A website can be a few "pages"
(a page is generally one screen of information
and / or pictures) or it can be hundreds
of pages. The following are some examples of typical
sites. Following also some additional costs to consider.
Small Site - This is a site with a 2-3 pages that typically
supports a single product or service. It might include a page of product information
with pictures, a page of contact or ordering
information and another page with a FAQ -
a list of Frequently Asked Questions. This type of site, depending on the detail
and time to develop could cost
anywhere from
$100 - $300.
Medium Site - This is a site 8 to 10 pages in size that
typically supports a small retail or service
business. It might include several pages product or
service information with several
pictures
each. It could also include an "about us"
page, a portfolio section, with descriptions
and images of previous products or jobs. Another few pages would cover contact and
ordering information and a FAQ
page. This type of site, depending on the detail
and time to develop could cost
anywhere from
$200 - $500.
Medium to Large "expertise" site - This type of site is perfect for a professional
that needs to show an ongoing expertise in
his/her business area. This type of site might start as an 8-10
page site, but continues to grow
as articles
and information are added. This type of site would be approximately
$200-$500 to develop, but would
be ongoing
as new information as added.
Large Site - this are an area where we could only estimate
after we had more details. A very rough estimate might be $30-60 per
required pages. So a 10-page site would be $300 to $600 and
a 30-page site might be $900
to $1800. In many cases, this is a site that starts
smaller and grows over time.
Other related considerations -
Photography Many sites make extensive use of photographs
and other images. These can come to K&A in three ways -
your digital photographs, your traditional
(paper) photographs and images that K&A
creates or photographs. Since these images greatly enhance your site
and your business's reconizability, don't
underestimate the impact. Depending on how "web ready" these
images are, they can add to you site's development
costs. A rough estimate might be $5 each for clean
images that are scanned from
your photos. Also, most images require some editing (aka
Photoshop work) for resizing,
color correction,
sharpening or cropping for website
use and
these tasks will also add to
the totals (some
of this work is included in the
estimates
provide above, but if your site
requires
a lot of photo work, you might
want to consider
that as you review these estimates.)
On going maintenance - Web sites get stale faster than bread! Users who visit your site more than once
are often looking for fresh content, new
images and proof that you are still out there
(unfortunately, there are a lot of abandoned
websites that are still "up" but
not really supported anymore.) K&A will keep you website fresh will
new images, content and product
or service
information. Generally this kind of program is based on
weekly, monthly or quarterly
updates, but
the frequency can be geared to
your particular
business. Typical rates are $50 to $100 per update
cycle, depending again on the
complexity
of the work involved.
Housekeeping and Site Overhaul's - Upfront, keep in mind that your website
will need to have some "housekeeping"
done occasionally. While it depends on the volume of posts and
information, it would be safe
to figure these
costs as 5 - 8 hours once to
twice a year. This clears away outdated information and
keeps all the "behind the
scenes"
files organized and structured. Periodically, you may also wish to "overhaul"
the site, changing images, colors
and navigation
tools just in the name of keeping
it "fresh." This would be done via a quote as these types
of products vary a great deal
in required
effort.
