Auto Destruction in 1:11

Benjamin's story continues.

Just'l: That's not good enough. We need more speed.

Just'l reached over to the t-headed lever and pulled it back some more.

Almost instantly an alarm sounded. It screamed, almost as if it were a living thing in pain. The sled, which until this point had been "alive" with a warm, gentle humming, now growled and shuttered. Our movements, once smooth and sure, became rocky. We struck pockets of denser, cold air like a car that's hit a speed bump too fast, skittering sideways with each one.

Just'l: Base, speed is now Mach 2.77 - Can you give us a revised ETA ....

Q-Pid: She can't take much more of this - she'll blow up for sure!

I looked at the display. The intercooler pressure, the one that could get us "blown past next Christmas" was now way into the redline - about 118% of the safe reading.

Q-Pid: (quietly) You're still going to arrive about 15 seconds after the self destruct goes off.

Just'l, you've tried, but maybe it's just not meant to be.

As I watched, Just'ls jaw tightened and I could almost hear the gears in his head spinning. After a few seconds he reached for the accelerator lever, the one with the t-head. I expected him to push it forward and slow us down.

Instead, he pulled it back.
